“Clean technologies for sustainable environment – waters, waste, energy for circular economy“ (Clean&Circle) for creation and development of a Centre of Competence

The fourth meeting of representatives of the partner organisations was held at the Clean&Circle Centre of Competence. During the discussions, significant progress was reported in the number and development of scientific studies—one of the main objectives set by the team at the previous meeting. The partners discussed both the results achieved and the potential practical applications of the scientific developments, as well as future goals, ideas, and plans for the Centre’s development. The meeting was once again opened by the coordinator of Clean&Circle, Assoc. Prof. Dr Ivaylo Yotinov, who emphasised the importance of active cooperation between the partner organisations.

Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” was represented by Assoc. Prof. Dr Yovana Todorova, who reported on the progress of the scientific research conducted at the University. She highlighted the importance of the ongoing experiments, the active work of the research teams, and their motivation to continue developing the research areas already initiated. The Sofia University team is currently working on producing biogas from waste collected at the landfill of the Sofia Municipal Waste Treatment Enterprise. The project is an example of a practical circular economy solution that combines the utilisation of waste resources with opportunities for energy production and tangible economic benefits.

The Institute of Organic Chemistry with Centre of Phytochemistry, the Institute of Physical Chemistry, and the “Stefan Angeloff” Institute of Microbiology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences were represented respectively by Prof. DSc Pavlina Dolashka, Assoc. Prof. Dr Avdeev, and Prof. Dr Penka Petrova. The representatives of the institutes reported progress in recruiting and appointing new experts who will support the implementation of the scientific and research activities. The Institute of Organic Chemistry with Centre of Phytochemistry at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences highlighted the international scientific seminar held at the Clean&Circle Centre of Competence, featuring Dr Ruslana Mazurenko from the Polish Academy of Sciences as guest lecturer. The event contributed to the exchange of scientific expertise, the presentation of current research, and the expansion of the Centre’s international contacts.

The representatives of the University of Forestry presented their article entitled “Relationships Between the Structure and Properties of Hot-Pressed Wood–Polymer Composite Boards Produced from Recycled ABS Edge-Banding Waste and Wood Fibres”. The research focuses on the utilisation of industrial waste through the use of recycled thermoplastics to develop wood–polymer composites without the addition of formaldehyde-based resins. The development has the potential to contribute to the creation of more sustainable materials, waste reduction, and the decreased use of substances with adverse effects on the environment.

Dimitar Margaritov, representing CleanTech Bulgaria, reported significant progress in organising and equipping the space within the New Technologies Accelerator. The activities are aimed at creating a suitable environment for the development, testing, and presentation of innovative solutions with potential practical applications. A 3D printer is now operational in the Clean&Circle building and will be a valuable tool in prototype development, the production of experimental models, and the acceleration of the process from scientific concept to technological implementation.

The meeting provided the partner organisations with an opportunity to present their achievements, discuss the next steps, and review the results already accomplished. The participants exchanged ideas regarding future scientific developments, joint initiatives, and opportunities for the practical application of the solutions created. They expressed their shared intention to continue their coordinated efforts towards achieving long-term and meaningful results in the fields of innovation, science, sustainable development, and the circular economy.
