At the end of January 2026, working meetings were held at the Competence Centre “Clean & Circle” for the strategic planning of a new series of studies focused on the development and evaluation of innovative eco-friendly construction materials. The focus is on bricks made from waste-derived products and natural components – hemp fibers, lime, and gypsum.
These materials represent a promising alternative to traditional construction solutions, combining the principles of the circular economy, reduced carbon footprint, and the use of renewable resources. They have the potential to improve the energy efficiency of buildings and contribute to a healthier indoor environment.
However, under certain conditions – especially at elevated humidity levels – there is a risk that these bio-based materials may become a favorable environment for mold growth. The metabolic products and spores of microscopic fungi can negatively affect indoor air quality and human health, potentially causing allergic reactions, respiratory problems, and other chronic conditions.
In response to these challenges, a multidisciplinary team from CC “Clean & Circle,” including specialists from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at UACEG, Sofia University (Faculty of Biology), and the Institute of Microbiology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, has launched joint research. The main objective is to identify:
-
potential microbiological risks,
-
the factors that promote the development of microorganisms,
-
opportunities for prevention and control through technological and material improvements.
The experimental work will be carried out using the Centre’s modern research infrastructure, including a confocal laser scanning fluorescence microscope located in the new research building. The equipment enables high-resolution imaging and analysis of microbiological structures, biofilms, and cellular interactions within the actual material environment, which is essential for early diagnostics and risk assessment.
By integrating civil engineering, microbiology, and biological sciences, “Clean & Circle” demonstrates how sustainable construction and public health can and should be considered interconnected priorities. This approach ensures that innovations in green construction not only protect the environment but also create a safe and healthy environment for people.
