Project

“Clean technologies for sustainable environment – waters, waste, energy for circular economy“ (Clean&Circle) for creation and development of a Centre of Competence

Every sip of clean drinking water is HEALTH, LIFE AND LONGEVITY! When we drink it, we feel both TASTE and AROMA that pleasantly captivate us.

Scientists and researchers from the Clean&Circle Center of Competence, together with the laboratory research complex of Sofiyska Voda AD, conducted extensive studies on the “bloom” of the waters of the Iskar Reservoir and how this affects the smell of drinking water in the water supply network during May–June 2025. They found that the development of a larger amount of phytoplankton in the Iskar Reservoir this year is due to the specific combination of physicochemical and biological factors influencing the characteristics of the water entering the treatment plant. Based on their findings, important decisions were made at critical control points along the entire technological chain, and rehabilitation measures were carried out in the sand filtration units. These measures led to a rapid restoration of the taste and odor of the drinking water.

Young and experienced researchers from Clean&Circle and Sofiyska Voda AD took part in the study — PhD student Margita Aleksova, Seniha Velisha, Yoana Petrova, Plamen Zelenkov, and Associate Professor Irina Schneider. The research was presented at the international conference “Klimentov Days,” held on November 6–7, 2025.

The timely actions of the professionals reaffirm the key role of BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF WATER RESOURCES for PEOPLE’S HEALTH and consumer satisfaction. In this direction, Clean&Circle works daily to create new, more effective bioindicator technologies. You can read more about this at https://www.clean-circle.eu/.
