On April 23–24, 2025, the final meeting of the European project PROMISCES took place in Orléans, France, hosted by the French Geological Institute – BRGM. The event was attended by the team of Sofia University, represented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Evgeniya Benova, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jovana Todorova, and Chief Assist. Prof. Dr. Plamena Marinova from the Clean & Circle Competence Center.
During the meeting, the main results and innovations from the 3.5 years of work on the project were presented. Highlights included:
- progress in the identification, monitoring, and behavior of persistent contaminants such as PFAS and iPMT in the soil–sediment–water system;
- results from the seven real case studies, including Case Study 4 in Bulgaria, coordinated by Sofia University;
- innovative solutions for PFAS removal and remediation;
- development of practical tools and guidelines for risk management, including a Decision Support Framework (DSF), policy recommendations, and a CEN-level agreement for the sustainable management of PMT/vPvM substances.
Delegates had the opportunity to visit BRGM’s laboratories and the pilot installation of Case Study 6, focused on investigating and treating soils and groundwater contaminated with PFAS from firefighting foams.
The closing day offered a more informal farewell, featuring a visit to the beautiful Ferté Saint Aubin Castle and a formal dinner, where consortium partners shared impressions, ideas, and future collaboration plans.
Special thanks go to all PROMISCES partners for their responsible, inspiring, and fruitful collaboration, as well as to the BRGM team and Ms. Julie Lions, project coordinator, for the excellent organization and hospitality.
