Today, students from the Ecology program at the University of Forestry visited the Faculty of Biology at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski.” The visit aimed to provide hands-on training for the students from the University of Forestry in water treatment technologies. Associate Professor Irina Schneider explained in detail how a municipal wastewater treatment plant operates, the most important microbial communities involved in biological water treatment, and the key parameters for process control.
The students also participated in laboratory demonstrations of some of the newest equipment at the Clean & Circle Competence Center. Associate Professor Ivaylo Yotinov visually demonstrated the macrostructure of activated sludge and the key representatives of microbial communities, while Assistant Professor Nora Dinova showed how the device for assessing the methanogenic potential of sludge works, a unique apparatus in Bulgaria. The students also visited the “Artificial River” facility, where Professor Eliza Uzunova explained how this pilot model functions.
After the visit, the students and their supervisor, Assistant Professor Aleksandrina Kostadinova, expressed satisfaction with the knowledge gained on biotechnological water treatment. The visit exemplifies how the University of Forestry and Sofia University, through the Clean & Circle Competence Center, jointly work to enhance the professional capacity of students in water treatment technologies. The modern scientific infrastructure of the Clean & Circle Center greatly supports this effort.
