“Clean technologies for sustainable environment – waters, waste, energy for circular economy“ (Clean&Circle) for creation and development of a Centre of Competence

On November 23, 2023, a solemn celebration was held in the Aula of the University of Forestry to mark the 50th anniversary of the beginning of environmental education in Bulgaria. The University of Forestry was the first higher education institution to launch environmental education in Bulgaria, on March 30, 1973, by order of the then Committee for Technical Progress and Higher Education. This milestone came one year after the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment and two years before the First Intergovernmental Conference on Environmental Education and Nature Protection.

Former and current lecturers, as well as graduates of the University of Forestry – ecologists from all cohorts of the “Ecology and Environmental Protection” program, from the very first class to the most recent, took part in the celebration.

Greetings were delivered by Deputy Minister of Environment and Water – Reneta Koleva, Deputy Mayor of Sofia Municipality, Directorate "Green System, Ecology and Land Use" – Nadezhda Bobcheva, Scientific Manager of the project for the establishment of the Center of Competence Clean and Circle at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" – Assoc. Prof. Evgeniya Benova, and others. A woven carpet made from textile waste featuring the department’s logo was presented by Gergana Kodzhebashieva – Manager of Ecologistica Ltd.

Lecturers from the department – Prof. Ekaterina Todorova, Assoc. Prof. Petar Petrov, Assoc. Prof. Ralitsa Kuzmanova, and Senior Assistant Prof. Georgi Kadinov presented the work of faculty members, students, and PhD candidates on major international and national projects in the fields of science, education, and implemented research achievements.

The academic address by Prof. Ekaterina Todorova – Dean of the Faculty of Ecology and Landscape Architecture concluded with the well-known statement: “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”
