The team of Prof. Pavlina Dolashka and Prof. Narzislav Petrov from the Institute of Organic Chemistry with Phytochemistry Center – BAS, a partner in the project for establishing the Center of Competence “Clean&Circle”, developed activated carbon masks for protection against Covid-19.
The activated carbon is a by-product from apricot pits. It has been tested for cleaning severe diabetic wounds and has shown a strong adsorption capacity against bacteria and viruses. The research and protective properties of the mask filters were tested by the team of Prof. Stoyan Shishkov at the Faculty of Biology of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, proving that the filter does not allow viruses to pass through for nearly 50 hours. It has also been proven that the mask can be sterilized and used multiple times.
The Minister of Economy, Emil Karanikolov, held a meeting with Bulgarian manufacturers and the scientists involved in the development, where samples of the masks were presented. As a result, several companies have already started production of the masks, which will help the state supply citizens, medical, and support staff with protective equipment. The masks will be distributed through the pharmacy network across the country.
